Understanding Social Anxiety & Help and Hope

Greetings! I am back from a break due to becoming a new grandmother!

Social anxiety is when an individual demonstrates shyness and being timid in social settings.

People who suffer with social anxiety are also extremely sensitive to criticism and feeling that they do not have approval from others.

They feel foolish if they do talk with others and they fear that they said the wrong thing.

Most people also do not have social connections outside of their immediate. family.

They also avoid social situations of any kind.

Further, individuals who suffer with social anxiety suffer with varying degrees of anxiety and panic attacks which include increased heart rate, dry moth, muscle tension, and feeling shaky.

There is help and hope for social anxiety.

First it is helpful to pinpoint as to the reasons in which someone has their social anxiety. Thus, it is important to find the 'root' of the issue.

A person's insight into their social anxiety is also important. You cannot heal what you do not acknowledge.

Self-talk needs to be challenged and modified.

Identifying defense mechanisms is also helpful as well as to gain insight into inner conflicts.

In counseling, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Mindfulness can be helpful

If you or someone that you know has social anxiety, know that there is help and hope for healing.
